Leon and Gwen McGarrity opened the Dexter Queen in 1949.   Initially called the Daisy Queen, it soon became the local favorite- known for outstanding ice cream, hamburgers, and 'The PIG' barbecue sandwiches.

THE DEXTER QUEEN STORY

The kind folks over at the Daily Statesman wrote an excellent article about the history of the Dexter Queen.  If you want to know even more about the history of our restaurant, it makes for a very interesting read!

Leon's most popular sandwich, the 'Pig',
was crafted of sliced, hickory-smoked  pork topped with slaw and his secret mustard sauce, it became 'what's for dinner' and has remained so to this day!

Lori Hawkins purchased the Dexter Queen in December 2007, becoming the 4th owner in its 63 years.

Today, the restaurant routinely serves lunch and dinner to over 2,000 people a week.  The Dexter Queen has totally renovated the restaurant, adding a take out window, replacing the roof and revamping the dining area, and now uses a state of the art smoker capable of barbecuing over 500 pounds of pork shoulder at a time!

The recipes have not changed one bit, and never will!

The Dexter Queen still serves hickory smoked sliced pork shoulder on the 'Pig' sandwich, and if you have a really big appetite, you can order the enormous 'Lotta Pig' sandwich.

It all come with your choice of sauce, including the Dexter Queen favorite, Leon's original secret recipe. And, hey, do you want some great fries with that?

In recent years, we have added 'The Skinny Pig", a lighter BBQ sandwich on a wrap, 'The BBQ 'Tater', a large baked potato stuffed with BBQ goodness, and in March of 2012 debuted our own spin on a local secret, BBQ Nachos!

LOVE THAT BBQ!

Don't take our word for it... The Missouri Senate and House of Representatives have recognized our contribution to Southeast Missouri's culinary skills in BBQ!
